How to Efficiently Dispose of Electronic Waste in You Home

With the ever-changing world of tech products, and the constant need to buy and replace them, electronic waste is something that inevitably fills our homes and home offices. Old tech gadgets, computers, phones, printers, and televisions fill our home storage units with hopes of revisiting them one day. However, those electronics are still sitting in the same spot collecting dust.

In most states, it is illegal to toss your electronic waste in your standard household garbage can, and if you attempt to do so your waste management company may refuse to take it. This is because certain toxic chemicals are found in electronic products. These chemicals have the potential to be a hazard to people and the environment.

Here are Four ways to dispose of your electronics:

  1. Repair: Before you go and buy a replacement for your electronic device, see if you can repair it. There are many options for repairing which include bringing it to the authorized retailer you purchased it from or finding quick fixes online that walk you through on how to repair it.
  2. Resell: If you have a surplus of electronics consider selling them on websites such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or Poshmark. By selling your products you are giving them new life to be used or recycled into something new. If you choose to sell it is critical that you erase all of your personal information from your devices to ensure a safe transaction.
  3. Donate: If your products are still in decent condition and you see no use for them anymore, look into donating them. This is a great option, especially for your old televisions and computers. You can donate your electronic goods to your local shelter or Goodwill.
  4. Recycle: If your products are gone beyond repair and cannot be resold, consider recycling them. Major chain corporations such as Staples and Best Buy offer e-waste recycling at their stores. At these stores, they will properly dispose of your electronics so they will be safely recycled and sealed.
